What your dance moves say about your love... moves

The love languages, but make them… *jazz hands* and *pause for dramatic effect* … DANCE MOVES.

Hey, it’s me, Puggy D, Shut Up & Dances’ favourite mascot coming to you with my hot take this Valentines Day. Love languages… as dance moves. The jazz hands and pause is a clue about my love language in the form of a dance move, by the way. If you can’t guess it, then you’ve landed on the right page, because you’ve got some studying to do. I’ll tell you my dance love language at the end 😉

So, the love languages. They can be understood as candlelit dinners (quality time) and handwritten notes (words of affirmation),. And while they’re lovely, they’re not dance moves, which is unfortunate, because I think real romance is found on the dance floor. You know, with yourself, with your friends, with your lover(s). I think the way you express love is written in the way you move - whether you’re pulling off dramatic spins in the middle of the dance circle or running mans on the side with your bestie. If love languages explain how we connect, then dance moves are how we bring that connection to life 😍 Slash impress strangers at weddings 😗

So, which move is your love language in groove form? Let’s break ‘em down.

Words of affirmation = the microphone grab 🎤

This love language is all about saying how you feel, and nothing communicates that like grabbing an invisible mic mid-routine and lip-synching an Aguilera-style trill with unfettered confidence and likely some overpowering, good quality eye-contact. Whether you’re singing/screaming to your besties, your date, or vibing with (or borrowing the mic off) the DJ, your dance floor presence is built around making sure everyone feels the moment. You probably live for karaoke nights and can’t resist an over-the-top power ballad. Never forget this moment Beyoncé handed her mic to a fan.

Gift giving = the point-and-wink 🤌

Oh boy. The point-and-winker is a gift to all, and they’re no more in their element than they are on a packed dance floor at a good ol’ knees up. This is the person for whom every move that flows out of their body feels like an invitation - a generous offering of rhythm you can’t not accept. It goes like this: You spy their move from corner of your armpit (yes that’s a thing), and boom you’re in sync. A domino effect of hip pops, exaggerated winks and finger guns spread across the room in unison. This person gives energy on the dance floor. Think… Celine Dion doing Carpool Karaoke with James Corden. That woman could sing a shopping list and it’dfeel like the grandest gift to humanity.

Acts of service = the dance battle hype machine 🪩

You show love by showing up, and on the dance floor, that means hyping the people around you. Holding someone’s drink so they can bust a move? You understood the assignment. Screaming “yasss” when your friend does something (literally anything)? Always. You don’t just dance for yourself; you dance for the squad, making sure everyone feels like they own the night. Think… Lizzo! It’s Lizzo hyping up her backup dancers and absolutely living for their moves.

Quality time = the synchronized routine 👯‍♀️

You believe that the best moments are shared, and nothing brings people together quite like coordinated choreo on the dance floor. You’re the person who gathers everyone for a Single Ladies routine, insists on learning a TikTok video as a group, doesn’t cringe when the Macarena comes on, and emits a squeal of joy when everyone claps or clicks or stomps at the same time. It’s ok to accept you (still) want to be in the music video for Stop by The Spice Girls.

Physical touch = the trust fall 🙏

You live for movement that connects, and on the dance floor, that means twirls, dips, and just the right amount of trust exercises. You’re the first to initiate a dramatic dip (often with someone whose never done one before) the last to back down from a dance challenge, and you have absolutely 100% attempted (key word, attempted) a Dirty Dancing lift after exactly half-a-glass-too-many. Relive Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud music video. It has my heart 🥹

So, what’s your dance love language?

Just like there’s more to a “quality time” person than a candlelit dinner, the dance version of your love language has endless manifestations - so hopefully this article hasn’t been a complete waste of your time and you’ll be thinking about how you can expand yours 😂 It is Valentines Day after all! Whether you’re ignoring it (it is another opportunity to spend money you might not need to spend) or opting to celebrate it with the people you care about (yourself is included) just remember: any time you move your body, you’re loving your body 😍

Psst! Puggy D is a mix of the microphone grab and the point-and-wink. Duh!
